04.30.08ONLINE CALCULATOR SHOWS COST OF LIVING, SUPPORT SERVICES
A new online household expense calculator links Washingtonians with valuable work support services--including child care assistance, housing subsidies and food stamps. Launched in October 2007, the Washington State Self Sufficiency Calculator builds on a previous calculator developed by the Workforce Development Council of Seattle-King County, and allows individuals and case managers to test different strategies for achieving financial, career and education goals. Development of the site was funded by a $100,000 grant from the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation, and contributions from a partnership of Workforce Development Councils statewide and the State Board for Community and Technical Colleges.

04.22.08Yakima Job Fair 2008
The job fair, started nine years ago, is sponsored by WorkSource Yakima, the South Central Workforce Council, Yakima County, the city of Yakima and the Yakima Chamber of Commerce. An estimated 500 job-seekers attended the five-hour event at the Yakima Convention Center, said Larry Sanchez, regional director for Employment Security's WorkSource program. Between 1,000 and 3,000 prospective applicants have attended in past years, Sanchez said. The number of employers stayed steady at around 85. "My sense is people are working; that's why they are not coming," he said.

The 2007-2009 Strategic Plan for the South Central Workforce Development Area-- comprised of Kittitas, Klickitat, Skamania and Yakima counties-- presents the local area's vision, goals, objectives and strategies for the workforce development system and has been submitted to the State for Governor approval.
